AGREAT BLACK MAN IN THE WORLD
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta,
Georgia. He was the son of a pastor and, just like his father, he also
wanted to be a pastor. In 1947 he was ordained. However, he just
became minister of a Baptist Church in 1954.
King's civil right career started in 1955 when he led the Montgomery
Bus Boycott, a poitical and soCial protest campaign against the policy of
racial segregation. In 1957, he organized the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference.
Due to Martin Luther King's constant work on combating racial inequality through nonviolen ce, he
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. On April 4, 1968, he was shot and killed as he stood on
the balcony of the Lorraine Motel- now a National Civil Rights Museum - in Memphis, Tennessee.
