The History of the Ballpoint Pen

When writing an article for a newspaper, Hungarian journalist Laszlo Biro (realize) how much time he (waste) filling up his fountain pen and removing ink stains. On a visit to a newspaper, he (notice) that the ink that was used to print the papers (leave – neg.) any stains and (dry) quickly.

Laszlo and his brother George, who was a chemist, started working on the idea of a new kind of pen. They (design) a tube with a cartridge inside. They (fill) the cartridge with the same Indian ink used in newspapers and (put) a tiny metal ball at the end of the cartridge to transfer the ink from the pen onto the paper. Laszlo obtained his first patent in 1938.

The first models (fail), but the Biro brothers (make) improvements to the initial project and (take) out a new patent in 1943.

Later, the British government (buy) the rights to the ballpoint pens so Royal Air Force crews could use theses pens during World War II. The efficiency of Biro’s pens caused their popularity to spread quickly and nowadays ballpoint pens are a success all over the world.
