During the winter, a man (Jack Nicholson) is hired to stay as a lookout at a Colorado hotel and goes there with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and her son (Danny Lloyd). However, continued isolation begins to cause him serious mental problems and he becomes increasingly aggressive and dangerous as his son begins to see visions of past events that were also caused by excessive isolation.
